Judge

Dear Judge,

You have a critical role on Tuesday September 24th because, as a judge, you and your colleagues will decide the winners from the events of the evening.  Please be aware that you should NOT make yourself known if you can help it. ALSO, do not confer with other judges. You are rating your view of the best speaker.

Please become familiar with the following documents.  For a club contest (which this is) you need only be a paid up member to be a judge, chief judge or tie-breaking judge.

Form 1170 – A Declaration by the Judges

You will need to sign a declaration in Form 1170.  You are signing to say that you are eligible AND that you will be impartial. The contestants have put a lot of effort into this and so the judges need to refresh their memory as to how to approach the judging role.

Please would you download Form 1170, sign it, scan or iPhoto it, and then return it to this email address contest-prep@hullspeakers.org

Remember, We Are Doing Two Competitions.

You will see that there are two forms for judging.

  • 1191 is for the Best Speaker in the Humorous Speaking Competition
  • 1180 is for the Best Speaker in the Table Topics Competition.

They place the emphasis on different things so please be sure to have the right one for the right contest.

How You Assess the Best Speaker

For both competitions, the best speaker on the evening is your choice. You will see the preferred measures in the guides for judges below.  Using them ensures you have been objective and considered relevant factors.  However, no-one sees your gradings as you rip off your decision sheet from the rankings.  But you should aim to be totally impartial.

Rules

It is very unlikely that you will need to read the rules as the summary above should be sufficient. But if you would like to do so then they are attached below.

Your decision to be a judge is very much appreciated.
